A professional association focusing on the advancement of African-American journalists, the NABJ recently held its annual convention at the J.W. Marriott Miami Turnberry Resort and Spa near Miami, Florida. At the event, 25 African-American female journalists took a picture together showing off the natural hairstyles they wear on air, including curls, locs, braids, and afros.
Sia Nyorkor, a weekend anchor at WOIO who was part of the group picture, said she opted to “go natural” the previous year, challenging norms in an industry where slick, straight hairstyles dominate. After covering her natural hair with wigs or going through time-consuming straightening or weaving treatments, she decided to just be her natural self. She said she was happy to find so many other African-American female professionals doing the same thing, which made her feel more comfortable and less alone.
